More info about this coffee:
This delicious coffee is named after one of the farmers at Bugoyi washing station, Patrick. Located on the shores of Lake Kivu, Bugoyi benefits from the winds blowing off the lake, which help dry the coffee evenly. Acquired in 2016, Bugoyi station partners with around 5,000 local farmers, many of whom cultivate small plots of land with about 250 coffee trees intercropped with food crops like maize and potatoes. For these farmers, coffee is often their main source of income.
To support quality production, Bugoyi provides training, safety equipment, small loans, and access to clean water. Farmers are taught essential skills like soil conservation, water protection, and waste management through Farmer Field Schools (FFS), where a lead farmer shares knowledge with their community.
During harvest, coffee cherries are carefully handpicked and sorted at Bugoyi. A dedicated team oversees every step of the process, from pulping to drying. The cherries are graded into various categories, ensuring only the best beans make the cut.
The drying process at Bugoyi is meticulous. Drawing inspiration from slow cooking, the station allows the coffee to dry gradually for up to 93 days. This slower process is believed to enhance the flavour and longevity of the coffee, creating a rich and uniform taste profile.
This careful attention to detail and support for farmers ensures that every batch from Bugoyi washing station reflects the dedication and passion behind its production.
