Artist Gill Bustamante Shines on BBC's 'Home Is Where The Art Is': A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

Gill Bustamante, one of our talented artisans was lucky enough to step into the spotlight on episode 12 of BBC One's 'Home Is Where The Art Is' Season II, back in 2020. The series has recently been aired again so we had a little chat with Gill to capture her memories of the filming process. Join us as we take you behind the scenes of Gill's experience on the show.

The series features three talented artists from the UK who compete for the opportunity to create bespoke art pieces for clients seeking art masterpieces in their homes. 

Gill's episode began with a visit to a house near London, where she met her fellow artists, David Alderslade and Dan Calderwood. As the cameras rolled, the artists delved into studying the house's existing art and objects, seeking insights into the clients' tastes and preferences. Armed with a brief left by the clients detailing their likes and dislikes, each artist worked on formulating a proposal that aligned with the clients' desires.

The next step of this artistic adventure led Gill and her peers to a film studio in Manchester. Here, they presented sample artworks to the potential clients, offering them a glimpse of the artistic magic they could create. TV presenter Nick Knowles, conducted interviews with the artists, capturing their creative spirits on camera. The stakes were high, as only two out of the three artists would be selected to bring the clients' visions to life, and only one would emerge victorious.

The moment of triumph arrived when Gill secured the commission to craft a unique artwork for Jenny and Rob Zhong-Rees. The result? A stunning painting that now graces their wall, a testament to Gill’s talent.

A significant part of the series involved BBC's film crew stepping into Gill's studio, capturing her artistic process in action. Painting, often a solitary endeavor, gained a communal dimension as Gill embraced the novel experience of being filmed and interviewed. To get further insight into her ways of working, Gill and the crew ventured to the captivating Ashdown Forest, a spot that inspires much of her art.
